Skill Domain Expansion
The Skill Domain Expansion feature enhances skill matching by considering the multiple domains associated with a skill.
It helps identify relevant skill relationships across different domains and improves the contextual relevance of Search and Match results.
A skill can be associated with more than one domain. For example, a skill such as Python can be relevant to Software Development, Data Science, and Artificial Intelligence. When Skill Domain Expansion is enabled, the system uses the available Taxonomy and ontology relationships to consider these domain associations during matching.
How Skill Domain Expansion Works
When skillDomainExpansion is set to true, the
system identifies the domains associated with the skills available in the Resume or
Job Description and uses the related ontology information during matching.
For example, consider a Job Description that contains the skill Python. In the Taxonomy dataset, Python can be associated with multiple domains, such as Software Development, Data Science, and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning.
When Skill Domain Expansion is enabled, the system considers these multiple domain
associations instead of treating Python as a skill from only one domain. With
ontologyBasedSearch enabled, the system can also consider
related skills and aliases available within those ontology relationships, such as
Django, Pandas, TensorFlow, Keras, or PyTorch, depending on the
relationships available in the Taxonomy dataset.
As a result, a candidate who may not have exactly the same skill combination as the Job Description can still be identified as relevant when their skills belong to the related domains and ontology relationships. This helps improve the contextual accuracy of skill matching.
Skill Domain Expansion can be applied to the following match types:
-
JD to Resume
-
Resume to JD
-
JD to JD
-
Resume to Resume
Prerequisite
Ontology Based Search must be enabled to use Skill Domain Expansion.
"ontologyBasedSearch": true,
"skillDomainExpansion": trueThe skillDomainExpansion functionality works only when
ontologyBasedSearch is set to true.
Usage
To enable Skill Domain Expansion, set the skillDomainExpansion
parameter to true.
"skillDomainExpansion": true
The parameter accepts the following Boolean values:
-
true— Enables skill domain expansion. -
false— Disables skill domain expansion.
When the feature is disabled, the existing matching behavior is used without skill domain expansion.
Supported APIs
Skill Domain Expansion is supported with the following Match APIs:
Compatible Features
Skill Domain Expansion can be used with the following Search and Match features:
-
Match using Indexed IDs
-
Match Ontology Skills
-
Skill Ranking
-

Error Handling
The skillDomainExpansion parameter accepts only Boolean values.
If an invalid value is provided, the API returns the following error:
Error Code: 2191
Message: skillDomainExpansion type must have value either true or
false.
Important Considerations
Skill Domain Expansion depends on the domain and ontology relationships available in the Taxonomy dataset.
Enabling the feature can change the matching results because additional relevant domain associations and ontology relationships are considered during matching.
